About the volunteering opportunity
Meadow breeding habitats are typically wet meadows and moors, which have come under enormous pressure in recent decades due to more intensive agriculture, land consumption and climate change. The dwindling habitat and human intervention have led to a massive decline in the population of the Eurasian curlew, for example. The Audi Environmental Foundation is therefore working together with the LBV (Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz) in a joint project to protect this bird.
In a model area north of the Altmühlsee, curlew chicks are fitted with telemetry transmitters to determine their whereabouts and investigate the causes of loss. On the one hand, this has made it possible to document predation events, but also to initiate specific conservation measures, such as agreements with farmers to postpone the mowing of meadows where curlew families with tagged chicks are present, as well as to develop, adapt and evaluate medium and long-term conservation efforts.
In order to offer the young birds a protected area for hatching, a 4.5 km long protective fence must be erected in March each year, which must then be dismantled again at the end of June when the birds fledge.
The curlews need the support of you and your team for this fence construction and dismantling work!
Join us and make a lasting contribution!

Your Tasks
The task of the volunteers is to work with the LBV and the Audi Environmental Foundation to set up the meadow breeding bird protection fence in the Wiesmet (wetland south of Ansbach) or in the Donaumoos near Langenmosen.
In addition to your active commitment to the Eurasian curlew, you will learn a lot about its importance for biodiversity and its way of life.
